Danielle Brown in George Balanchine's Diamonds

When principal dancer Danielle Brown first joined Sarasota Ballet nine years ago, assistant director Margaret Barbieri encouraged her to think beyond technique.

“I was very caught up with how nice my feet were, how high my legs were and how many turns I could do. She taught me that the quality and feeling of the movement are just as important as how high your legs go. I still remind myself of that, and she reminds me all the time. She tells me to let go and be myself onstage.”

See Brown and Sarasota Ballet at The Joyce Theater in New York City, August 8–13.
