Recommended: Tallulah’s Tap Shoes
September 1, 2015

Written by Marilyn Singer and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger

Clarion Books; 48 pages; $16.99

Even those unfamiliar with the Tallulah series (Tallulah’s Tutu, Tallulah’s Nutcracker) will identify with the plucky, ballet-loving protagonist. At summer camp, Tallulah takes tap for the first time and feels uncomfortable when she realizes she isn’t the best in the class. With the help of a new camp friend, Kacie—who’s already a talented hoofer but new to ballet—Tallulah discovers that trying new things can lead to unexpected friendships and interests. Younger students will enjoy Boiger’s vibrant watercolor illustrations and Singer’s use of basic ballet and tap vocabulary. On a more subtle level, they’ll walk away with an understanding of the rewards of hard work and persistence.
