Dancers taking class at The PULSE On Tour

It was a star-studded evening at the Grand Hyatt Hotel last night. The PULSE On Tour held their ten-year anniversary celebration gala to conclude the PULSE Summer NYC intensive and the 2014–15 tour season. This culmination of four jam-packed days of dance featured new works by faculty members like Ian Eastwood, Brooke Lipton and the recently Emmy-nominated Tessandra Chavez. Guest choreographers Kyle Hanagami, Sisco Gomez and JT Horenstein rounded out the program with additional crowd-pleasers.

The first words that came to mind as I watched the gala performances were “coolness overload.” Dancers chosen from the PULSE's regional conventions brought their A-game to choreography that expertly melded athleticism, stylistic nuance and confidence. Standout works included Cris Judd’s Broadway jazz piece, Theresa Stone’s narrative work On the Other Hand and Tricia Miranda’s battle of the sexes set to Kesha’s “Die Young.” The dancers looked right at home dancing the hip-hop/contemporary-fused style that characterized the majority of the choreography.

The 2015–16 Elite Protégés were announced at the end of the show. Fourteen lucky dancers were selected by the PULSE faculty to train with them on scholarship throughout the upcoming tour season. Since being a PULSE Elite Protégé has lead to many a successful professional dance career, the dancers’ joy in being selected was palpable.
