The White House named Alvin Ailey a posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor that a U.S. civilian can receive. Ailey, who started his company in 1958 with seven African-American dancers, was chosen for his commitment to modern dance and civil rights. Robert Battle, who now directs the multiracial company of 31 dancers, accepted the award on behalf of Ailey.
