National Geographic Meets Ballet
July 10, 2015

Dancers from the Panamanian National Ballet balance on top of a Diablo Rojo bus in Panama.

When a cultural and environmental photographer uses dancers as his subjects, the results are captivating. Since June, Kike Calvo, a photographer and journalist who works with National Geographic, has been publishing photos every few days in a series called World of Dances. As he travels, he snaps dancers from major companies—New York City Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Dance Theatre of Harlem—against iconic landmarks and natural landscapes. He has even experimented with some aerial photography using drones to get shots from unique angles. See the full series on Calvo’s National Geographic Voices page or on Instagram, @kikeo.

Great news for dancers: Calvo is seeking more subjects for his series! Reach him at [email protected] or leave a comment on Instagram.
