Watch Denise Caston Teach a Double Time-Step With Pickup
March 6, 2018

The double time-step is a foundational tap step that Denise Caston says often pops up in Broadway auditions. In fact, auditionees are frequently asked to demonstrate the time-step one by one. “Choreographers want to know: Can you learn it quickly? Can you keep time? Can you stylize it while doing both of those things? And can you sell it?'” she says. Caston constantly reminds her students to keep their weight slightly forward throughout the step, having them check their posture in the mirror.

Denise Caston was a Radio City Rockette for 10 years. She toured nationally with the musical Crazy for You and has performed Savion Glover’s choreography in NYC. In 2011, she was invited to speak at the TEDx Detroit Conference about her contributions to the cultural scene in Detroit, where she founded and produces the Motor City Tap Fest. Caston is also certified by the American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum for primary through level three.

Edward Tolve is a dancer with Caston & Company.
