Double-Duty Dancers: Combining Dance and Charity

Danceworks students

It sounds like something out of a fairy tale: In December, eight Colorado dance studios came together to host a benefit performance for Make-A-Wish Colorado. By the end of the night, the number were fairy-tale high, too–225 dancers had performed 35 routines to an audience of 1,100 and raised $13,853. Six-year-old Conner Arnold, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma (a rare bone cancer) earlier in 2013, was granted his wish of taking a Disney cruise with his family.

Danceworks of Colorado Springs studio owner Lyndzi Barnes decided to host the show as a way to encourage camaraderie among studios based in Denver and Colorado Springs. Barbara Ellis Studio of Dance, Derby Dance & Music Arts, Kemper Dance Academy, Revolution Dance Academy, Rhapsody Performing Arts Center, Starstruck Academy of Dance and Synergy Dance Academy all participated, as did the student council of Palmer High School.
