Dance Teachers Unite at the Dance Teacher Summit
May 10, 2018

“When we come together and start talking, everyone starts sharing so much and it’s just great. That’s my favorite thing to do all year long.” —Denise Wall, Dance Teacher Summit Ambassador

For years the Dance Teacher Summit has been offering opportunities for studio owners and dance instructors of all levels to work with world-renowned faculty members to improve their teaching methods, learn new styles of choreography and discover ideal ways to convey choreography to students.

But a major aspect of this annual event that participants consistently appreciate is the unity they feel with other professionals in their field who face similar obstacles.

Denise Wall, one of the Ambassadors for the Dance Teacher Summit, sees the benefits of this unity every year. “We’re all in the same boat. We’re all doing the same thing, and it’s great that we can come together and share,” says Wall.

For studio owners, the Summit offers a particularly unique experience to brainstorm ideas that can benefit multiple studios. “I run a lot of the roundtables at the Summit, and we bring owners together and talk about things like fundraising,” says Wall. “Even getting together and finding out ways to generate income during the summer months always helps.”

Of course, Wall says the topics expand beyond just financial benefits. “Oftentimes people come up with great ideas that other owners can use. Things like a policy that works well for payment collection, a certain rule that’s had good results or a new strategy for how to get the kids to have better etiquette.”

But with all of these benefits for owners, the focus is still on the kids and how all dance teachers can give their students the skills they need to succeed. According to Wall, “Just being with other teachers and taking classes, even beginning classes, can give you better tools to train the kids. We also do a lot of injury prevention and specialty classes.”

And the Summit gives teachers the chance to experience all of these benefits in a safe, secluded environment, which Wall says really helps. “It’s so nice to not have to worry about your students,” she says. “You’re there for you.” Teachers get to take time for themselves at the Summit, which only benefits students.

Benefiting students is everyone’s ultimate goal and, for Wall, the most rewarding thing about teaching. “When you work so hard and your student works so hard, and then years later, they’re getting into major colleges or working in the industry, I think that’s what unites dance teachers and makes it all worthwhile for us. That’s why I love doing this. Giving students of all ability levels a chance to succeed,” she says.

Each year studio owners and dance teachers from all over North America come to the Dance Teacher Summit for all of these reasons, and especially for the unity they feel with each other at the Summit. This year the Summit will take place in San Diego, CA, July 27–29 and New York, NY, August 3–5. And as Wall says, “No matter what type of studio you have or what your goals are, we’ve got the tools to help you better your business at the Dance Teacher Summit.”
