It's National Equal Pay Day: What Is Your Studio Doing to Combat the Gender Wage Gap?
April 2, 2019

Today is National Equal Pay Day, and according to the U.S. Department of Labor, women make 78 cents for every dollar that a man earns. As studio owners, you are in a unique position to combat this statistic.

Here are three things you can do to make a difference in the future financial success of your students and employees:

1. Review your books and make sure your employees are paid fairly and appropriately. Consider if there are any changes that should be made in order to make this happen.

2. Teach your dancers, both male and female, to negotiate for the pay that they deserve. Help them understand their value. Research what pay is in line with the market.

3. Ask questions, and become aware of potential disparities in pay across the industry. For example, are there differences in what male and female choreographers are asking you for when they come to set pieces? Educate your students on these general findings. Then, encourage them to pass the information to others as they themselves move into positions of council. Change can’t come unless we recognize where we need it and pass it on.

Change takes effort and knowledge. Help your students and employees get what they deserve!
