A Day in the Life of a Juilliard Dance Student

‘Tis the season to be jolly—and to put the finishing touches on those college applications. (You may even find yourself writing a recommendation letter or three for your students this holiday season.) As your dancers gear up for college auditions in the spring, now might be a good time for them to get a real rundown of what a day in the life of a college dancer feels like. Juilliard recently released a video following one of their second-year dance majors, Matthew Gilmore, and it’s quietly eye-opening.

Gilmore spends pretty much his entire day dancing—ballet, some old-school modern, two different rehearsals—with a music theory class throw in, too. Granted, Juilliard is a conservatory program, which means there’ll be more dancing than there would be in, say, a BA program. But that’s exactly the type of thing your students should know! (And if you want more day-in-the-life examples, definitely check out the Dance Magazine College Guide.)
