BDC’s 2009 Big Brother/Big Sister Broadway Showcase—This Weekend!!!
by Courtney Rae Allen
If you’re in or around the New York City area this Sunday, June 14, stop by The Danny Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (located at 68th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues) to check out Broadway Dance Center’s 2009 Big Brother/Big Sister Broadway Showcase. Tickets are $18 each, with two showings at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The recital is part of BDC’s Children & Teen Program (CTP), which began in 2001 and has since paired more than 85 professional Broadway dancers from shows like Fosse, Cats, Hairspray, The Lion King and My Fair Lady with children ages 9–17 as dance mentors.
This year, 14 young dancers were chosen after an audition in the spring and matched with a Broadway “Big Brother” or “Big Sister.” The pairs met over a course of five Sunday evenings to rehearse the recital's production number, which will be performed during the show's second half. It was staged by NYC-based choreographer, Lainie Munro and is set to the music of Liza Minnelli’s “City Lights” from Kander and Ebb's 1977 musical, The Act.
