Choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie Knows How to Make Kids Emote
March 13, 2018

While teaching a modern class during a two-week residency at The Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles, choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie captured a bit of magic. Twelve-year-old C’Mora Magee was singled out by Moultrie, who’s choreographed for Beyoncé and Dance Theatre of Harlem, to perform the combination to “Lost Boys,” by Crystal Monee Hall, solo in front of the group.

As Magee performed to the camera, Moultrie coached her from the periphery, calling out the rhythm and beats to hit. Magee interpreted the soulful song with the maturity and grace of a seasoned professional. “There’s just something about her,” he says. “The way she moves and how she hears the music, she’s just got it.”

Moultrie strives to teach his students from a young age about dancing with passion, by using soul and gospel music. “It’s a challenge because we’re trying to ask these young kids to feel, but they have no experience.”

Here’s another group at The Debbie Allen Dance Academy of kids truly feeling the music.
