Remembering Prince—With Dance, of Course

By now you’ve heard about the unexpected death of Prince, that gender-bending rock star (the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince, as I like to think of him). Maybe you grooved along to “Purple Rain” in the privacy of your own bedroom, choreographed a solo for a precocious dancer to “Baby I’m a Star” or tried copying all the moves from “Kiss.” Regardless, we’ve all felt a connection to his music.

Last night, two Broadway shows gave fitting post-show tributes to Prince. Here’s the cast of Hamilton, remembering the singer and musician with the dance tribute he deserves:

 

And The Color Purple, with some words from Jennifer Hudson:

 

The man was a consummate professional, even when performing at the Super Bowl’s halftime show in 2007, in pouring rain:
