Justin Peck’s New Ballet Has Some of the Most Extravagant Costumes Ever
February 4, 2016

On Tuesday night, New York City Ballet’s Justin Peck premiered his first evening-length ballet for the company—a narrative work called The Most Incredible Thing, based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen. And while I haven’t seen much of the ballet’s actual choreography (here’s a fun trailer, but it doesn’t show too much dancing), I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a ballet’s costumes.

They’re designed by Marcel Dzama, and every single look he’s created is fantastic. (And I think I mean fantastic in its most literal definition.) Check out this slideshow from WWD showing several of the dancers trying on their costumes. (The cast is 56 people strong!)

Maybe most telling is this behind-the-scenes slideshow from T: The New York Times Style Magazine with backstage, dressing room and aerial shots. I wonder how many hours NYCB’s director of costumes, Marc Happel, put into executing these beauties?

Don’t miss a single issue of Dance Teacher.
