The University of Chicago names Joffrey Ballet artistic director Ashley Wheater as the recipient of its Jesse L. Rosenberger Medal for achievement through research “deemed of great benefit to humanity.” Wheater, who danced with the Australian Ballet, San Francisco ballet and Joffrey, became artistic director in 2007, when the Joffrey was undergoing many leadership changes and struggling to remain a top-tier company. Under Wheater, the Joffrey has dramatically increased its touring schedule, commissioned new works (including Christopher Wheeldon’s new Nutcracker, which will premiere in 2016) and founded the company school, the Joffrey Academy of Dance.
