Dancing for My Havana

Dance Camera West announces winning films from the 30-plus entries screened at its 14th annual festival for dance on film, held in the Los Angeles area during May.

  • Audience choice award Attention, directed by Ramaa Mosley and choreographed by Tyra Hawthorne, shows a performance of the Heartbeat Music Academy’s dance-happy youth marching band, the Thunder Squad.
  • Best documentary Let’s Get the Rhythm: The Life and Times of Miss Mary Mack celebrates hand-clapping games, directed by Irene Chagall.
  • Best short Martiality, Not Fighting follows a group of dancers who negotiate the intensity of martial culture. It is a collaboration between choreographer Cheng-Chieh Yu and video artist Marianne M. Kim.
  • Special jury prize In Dancing for My Havana, directed by Claudio Del Punta and choreographed by Yordan Mayedo Perez, Cuban dancers struggle to find world fame even as they honor their homeland.
