Film still from Meteor

Four winning short films of the CalArts@ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition were screened at the Dance Camera West Festival in Los Angeles in May. The two college-division winners were awarded cash prizes, and the first-place high school winner received a scholarship to CalArts.

First place, college division Meteor, by Marymount Manhattan College’s Kynan Welsh, is inspired by Elizabeth Streb’s 2011 “Human Fountain” (which was, in turn, inspired by the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas).

Second place, college division Groundswell, by Kym McDaniel from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, translates a concert dance about finding physical and emotional grounding to film.

First place, high school division Grover Cleveland Charter High School’s Hannah Kaufman created Togettotheotherside to answer the question, “Why did the chicken cross the road?” and explore what it means to journey.

Honorable mention, high school division Tap Tap Tap, by Millikan Middle School’s Theo Taplitz, follows a boy, suffering from hearing loss, who finds a pair of magical tap shoes.
