The American Dance Festival dedicates its 82nd season to Dr. Charles “Chuck” Davis, founder of the nation’s largest African dance festival, DanceAfrica. Davis also created the Durham, North Carolina–based performance company African American Dance Ensemble. He has traveled extensively to Africa to study and is considered one of the most accomplished teachers and choreographers in traditional African dance. Davis’ previous honors include honorary doctorates, a 2004 Dance Magazine Award and a 2014 Bessie Award for outstanding service to the field of dance. A ceremony honoring Davis will take place this Thursday, June 11, at the Durham Performing Arts Center, just before ADF’s season-opening performance.
