Kozlova Goes Contemporary
April 1, 2014

2011 senior division gold medalists Young Gyu Choi and Ji Young Chae (aloft)

Former New York City Ballet principal Valentina Kozlova is instituting a new version of her formerly ballet-only competition: The International Contemporary Choreographers and Dancers Competition, held at New York City’s Symphony Space, April 28–29. Within this new framework, ballet will be absent; dancers may perform contemporary pieces barefoot or in soft shoes, and there is no age restriction. Both dancers and choreographers will be awarded prizes in separate categories. Solos, duets and group works may be entered in the competition. Prizes to be awarded include scholarships to programs at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Juilliard and the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, as well as commissions of works for Kozlova’s 2015 competition–which, she promises, will return to the strictly ballet sphere.
