Tribeca Film Festival to Honor Twyla
On April 26, the Tribeca Film Festival will present Twyla Tharp with a lifetime achievement award for 50 years of contributions to dance. Tharp has choreographed for major companies all over the world as well as movies and Broadway shows. Most recently, she worked on Broadway’s Come Fly Away and created The Princess and the Goblin, premiered by the Atlanta Ballet in early 2012.
The dance legend rounds out an eclectic group of honorees at the Festival’s quirkily titled Disruptive Innovation Awards. Her fellow lifetime award recipients include controversial political commentator Glenn Beck, Korean pop sensation Psy of “Gangnam Style” fame, and journalist Jose Antonio Vargas. What do you think the chances are of the notoriously serious choreographer giving Psy’s famous horse dance a try? (Yeah, we don’t think so, either.)
